Why I Run
This is my 8th year participating in the Sacramento Undy RunWalk to help raise awareness funds to help prevent colorectal cancer. In 2013, just 3 weeks after my colorectal cancer surgery, I triumphantly crossed the finish line for my first Undy RunWalk and have been continued to be involved with this unique and worthwhile cause! People are often reluctant and embarrassed to talk about colorectal cancer, but talking about it and getting the proper screening helps to catch this cancer at an early stage. Running or walking in these colorful boxers helps to bring awareness to the area that people are too embarrassed to talk about!
As a 2-time Lynch Syndrome Survivor (endometrial cancer & colorectal cancer), I’m determined to continue to be proactive and cancer-free!! Lynch Syndrome is a genetic predisposition to certain types of cancer with colorectal and endometrial being the 2 most common cancers associated with this syndrome. Early diagnosis & annual screenings for tumors and polyps will enable me to detect cancer before it becomes life-threatening. In a sense, my Lynch Syndrome diagnosis saved my life, as that annual colonoscopy enabled me to catch my colorectal cancer at a very early stage. Early detection is one of the best ways to prevent colorectal cancer, and the Colorectal Cancer Alliance is committed to achieving earlier, safe and more effective means of detection and treatment. This organization provides support for patients and survivors throughout the country.
I continue to be cancer-free and plan on remaining that way for many years! Once again, I’m joining forces with Western Health Advantage (WHA) and will be the team captain for WHAtch Your Tushie.
I hope you join me in your “Undies” on February 22, 2020 at William Land Park for the Undy RunWalk. Please support my involvement in the Undy RunWalk with a tax-deductible donation. Your support will help us prevent colorectal cancer and save lives.
