Team Evil Colon
Why We Run
In 2012, Mike Kukla was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. At that time, he was in the best health of his life, running Spartan races like they were going out of style. After being diagnosed, he continued his runs, and also became an advocate for cancer research as he represented the state of Oregon when speaking in front of Congress in 2015. That same year, Team Evil Colon was started in the annual Scope It Out 5K, with our blue afro wigs and our incredible hope for Mike to beat this awful disease. Mike continued to battle over the next several years, never hearing him complain as he endured chemo every other week, along with multiple surgeries to attempt to eliminate the cancer. One quote you often heard him refer to…
“You never know how strong you are, until strong is your only choice” – Bob Marley
Mike was the strongest person we know and lived life to the fullest until he passed on January 2nd, 2018. Mike was fortunate to have such a great support group of friends, coworkers, family, and acquaintances. We will all remember Mike in our own special ways and will keep his spirit alive, whether through Team Evil Colon, the Portland Soap Box Derby, the Colon Cancer Alliance, or through his best friend and beloved pup Jester. Team Evil Colon will continue in Mike’s honor, as we stress the importance of regular screenings and continue the fight to increase funding for cancer research.
We encourage anyone interested in joining Team Evil Colon, to grab a blue afro wig and meet us at Freedom Plaza in DC on March 29th. If you can’t join the event, feel free to donate in Mike’s honor and to a great cause, as we come together towards a cure for this horrible disease.
Special shoutout to Lindsey Jones for her amazing artwork of our “Evil Colon”!
