Diane and Joe Munso

Joseph Peter Munso passed away in his home on January 10, 2018 at the age of 64. He is survived by his children, Danny and Jessica; his sisters, JoAnn and Amy; his brother, Michael; his father-in-law, Ted; and his aunt, Ida. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Diane, who passed away in 2000; their son, Joey, who passed away in 1981; his loving parents, Joseph and Ann; and his mother-in-law, Irene. Joe was born in Sacramento where he remained for his entire life. He began working for the state of California at the age of 22 where he rose to prominent positions in State government, including Chief Deputy Director of the Department of Health Services under Governor Wilson and Undersecretary of the Health and Human Services Agency under Governor Schwarzenegger. He also was an inaugural and integral employee for the state's First 5 commission. Joe met Diane Hamilton in 1974 and they were married from 1976 until 2000 when Diane passed away from cancer. Their home was the center for family gatherings and was always full of love and laughter. An avid traveler, Joe could often be found convincing family members to go on various trips to his favorite places like Monterey and Disneyland or organizing the latest excursion to the U.S. Open. He was always planning a new road trip to any number of locations and if he could stay at a casino on the trip, even better. Joe would often be found surrounded by his many nieces and nephews and lately, great-nieces and nephews as he plied them with gifts, food, or on occasion, a guitar. In retirement ok, maybe even before retirement Joe became an avid collector of golf and Disney memorabilia. But that joy also spread to others. He was a giving and generous man, always thinking of others if he saw something they might like or need. If you were over at his house, it was only a matter of time before the doorbell rang and another package arrived from one of his favorite online shops. Joe will be missed by all those whose life he touched, from his close-knit family to the large group of friends and former work colleagues he held dear. He is with Diane now. A viewing will be held at George L. Klumpp Chapel of Flowers on Monday, January 29th from 5:00pm-8:00pm, located at 2091 Riverside Blvd. The funeral will be Tuesday, January 30th at 10:30am at Holy Spirit Church (3159 Land Park Drive), followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery (7101 Verner Ave in Citrus Heights).
