Why I Run
This is my 7th year participating in the Sacramento Undy RunWalk to help raise funds and awareness of colorectal cancer. As a colon cancer survivor, this event is near and dear to me. In 2013, just 3 weeks after my colon cancer surgery, I triumphantly crossed the finish line for my first Undy RunWalk, and ever since then, I've been involved with this unique and worthwhile cause. People are often embarrassed to talk about colon cancer, but talking about it and getting the proper screening is a way help catch this cancer at an early stage. Running or walking in these colorful boxers helps bring awareness to the area that people are embarrassed to talk about!
As a 2-time Lynch Syndrome Survivor (endometrial cancer in July 2010 and colon cancer February 2013), I am determined to continue to be proactive and cancer-free!! Lynch Syndrome is a genetic predisposition to certain types of cancer with colon & endometrial being the 2 most common cancers associated with this syndrome. Early diagnosis & annual screenings for tumors & polyps will enable me to detect cancer before it becomes life-threatening. In a sense, my Lynch Syndrome diagnosis saved my life, as that annual colonoscopy enabled me to catch my colon cancer at a very early stage! The best way to prevent colon cancer is early detection, and the Colorectal Cancer Alliance is committed to achieving earlier, safer, and more effective means of detection & treatment. This organization also provides support for patients and survivors throughout the country.
I'm pleased to report that I continue to be cancer-free! Once again, I'm joining forces with Western Health Advantage (WHA) and will be the team captain for WHAtch Your Tushie.
