Why I Run
Honoring and Remembering Dan…

“Dear Friends and Family,
I recently accepted the challenge of participating in the 2017 San Diego Undy Run/Walk, a “brief” run to fight colon cancer. We’re taking to the streets and running in our family-friendly underwear to help raise awareness and help fight colon cancer. It sounds silly, right? But we’re serious about the cause.
Here is a copy of what I posted to FaceBook on Tuesday:
Many of you know that I was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in January of 2015. This was a real shocker. I found out only by undergoing the routine colonoscopy you are supposed to get once you turn 50 years old. (I was 51). Although I waited too long, if I had put it off even a few more months, I would not be alive today. My primary and extended family has no history of cancer of any kind and in hindsight I had symptoms, but nothing that gave me any real warning that something was up. There is no cure for my condition but I've been able to hang on through a mix of chemo drugs, radiation therapy and surgery.
This Saturday, March 4, 2017 I will be participating in the Colon Cancer Alliance's UNDY 5k run/walk. I used to be an avid runner, but this will be the first run I've done since that initial diagnosis. I figure that if I can try doing this, my "big boned" dog Calvin can too. It's bound to be slow going.
